Daily consumption of meat (chicken or beef) is the cause of weight gain in the long term regardless of the amount of calories.

Nutrition is a complex area where many conflicting opinions face. Red meat is a food rich in iron and protein as advocated by some diets Atkins or Duran but banned by others.

Indeed, higher amounts of protein and limit satisfy the addition of other foods that they would promote weight gain but the meat can be high in fat.

To try to get everyone to agree a large study was conducted in European countries within the framework of a large project called European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), which is interested in multiple risk factors (physical activity, nutrition, alcohol consumption stopping smoking, eating away from home, obesity).

Part of the study, conducted by Anne Claire Vergnaud, Imperial College London, was particularly interested in the link between meat consumption and weight gain.

Their eating habits and life were analyzed over a period of 5 years from the responses provided by the volunteers a questionnaire adapted to the country.

Excessive consumption of meat, beef or poultry, promote weight gain, but also the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer risk.

250 grams of meat per day weight gain

The study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that people who consume 250 grams of meat daily All Types (red, white or sausage) took an average of 2 kg at the end of five years.

This result was observed in both men and women regardless of their age physical activity total calorie intake or type of food consumed next. Moreover, this difference is also observed for people of normal weight and overweight those for smokers or non-smokers.

However, it seems that the study shows bias: for example volunteers who participated in the study self reported their weight which can not be determined with precision and rigor the weight difference before and after the study. Reported dietary intake may prove to be incorrect since in general the people misjudge their daily consumption.

The researchers responsible for the study conclude still saying that it is better to reduce the amount of meat consumed to prevent weight gain in the long term.

Other studies further indicate that this is not the only reason to limit your intake of meat it is a source of cholesterol and therefore the risk of cardiovascular events it also promotes cancer of the large intestine.

Varied and balanced eating is indeed a source of well being and good health. So banish the meat would be an exaggeration, but eat less and do other contributions protein such as fish or dairy products.
