The Vokuhila: the 80s hairstyles celebrates its comeback!

An old friend from the 80s is back high in the trend course: the Vokuhila. The in-cut has evolved (luckily) over time and should convince even former Vokuhila skeptics in a weakened version

Briefly to the background of the hairdressing classic from the 80s: The word Vokuhila is the abbreviation of “front short, long behind”. The fringed pony goes over to short hair on the sides, while the hair at the back of the head is at least shoulder-length.

The prominent fan is about David Bowie, who was famous in addition to her music for her Vokuhila. Now, a few decades later, the Vokuhila is making a stylish comeback – crowning the heads of many trendsetters.

To whom does a Vokuhila fit?

Admittedly, who decides on a Vokuhila cut, takes courage. Especially when you wear the cut in its extreme version – fringed bangs, short shaved hair on the sides plus at least shoulder-length hair on the back of the head.

Currently, especially the weakened Vokuhila is very much in vogue. Does this mean? The pony is slightly fringed at this cut and goes up to the eyebrows, the hair on the temples are tiered so that the transition to the long mane does not seem so extreme.
With medium-long hair, the cut is also less extreme, since the transition of the different lengths is not so great.

Tip: The Vokuhila can be cut differently. It is advisable to choose a variant that is tailored to the personal hair type. A Schwarzkopf Professional Hairdresser, who can cut you a trendy Vokuhila, can be found using our Salon Finder.

80s Hairstyles: How to style the Vokuhila

The rediscovered trend hairstyle for thicker hair has the most modern effect, as the fringed cut looks voluminous than thin, straight hair.

Tip: For fine hair, knead a texturizing balm into dry hair and work in a volume powder for more fullness at the base. The Vokuhila is also a woman with natural curls.

Tip: After washing, work in a hazelnut-sized portion of hair foam and then dry the hair with a diffuser attachment. Finally, knead a few drops of hair oil into the tips – done.

Scrunchies: The Iconic Hair Ties From The Eighties Are Back

Ever heard of scrunchies? No, this is not a new food trend, but a rediscovered it-piece for your hair. The fabric-covered hair bands from the 80s are back and adorn more and more hairstyles by trend-setters. Especially the cult hair tie is worn in combination with bun and ponytail

Fans of the American cult series “Sex and the City” know the famous hair accessory, the Scrunchie (in German: Haargummi). Because this was the protagonist and fashionista Carrie Bradshaw end of the 90s as fashion or hairstyle faux pas frowned: “No woman with self-esteem would ever run around with a scrunchie.” Because of that, dear Carrie, you were mistaken.

For today, just two decades later, style icons decorate her hairstyle, preferably her ponytail or bun with exactly such a fabric-covered hair tie. The braver the wearer of the hairstyle, the more striking the scrunchie may be. Gladly made of velvet, wild patterned and multicolored. If you like it more discreet, decorate your hair with a plain colored hair tie made of cotton fabric or silk.

80s Hairstyles: What hairstyle do you style with a scrunchie?

The scrunchie is perfect as a Dutt hair tie. No matter if Top Knot, Messy Bun or Ballet-Dutt: The cult hairband coated with gathered fabric is simply loosely tied to the respective hairstyle – the quick trend update for your hair is ready.

New York label Mansur Gavriel shows us how to make the hairdo fewer 80ies, but all the more mature and modern. At their fashion show for Spring / Summer 2020 2021, the models wore a loose, deep ponytail with a scrunchie. Further proof that we will see more hairstyles with this hair tie in the future.

Trend Revival: Zopfgummi

Zopfgummi Hairstyles With The Thick Hair band

he Zopfgummi celebrates its comeback! Back in action and trendy, Zopfgummi – also known as “Scrunchie” – uses the opportunity to make old lovers happy and new ones to their side. We show hairstyles with the thick hairband and reveal what makes the trend sociable

Do you feel that your updo could use a bit of pep? Then dare to take a look into the past and decide on the heart of the 80s and 90s when it comes to hairstyling: the thick Zopfgummi!

Crazy patterns, bright colors and different materials: At the end of the 80s, at the beginning of the 90s the braid drove it colorfully on our heads. Now the practical hair accessory has found its way back into the limelight and celebrates its styling revival.

For the comeback, it makes the fabric-covered hair elastic quiet. With materials such as velvet, leather or silk the Scrunchie (English for hair elastic ) has a high quality. Covered colors like black or beige make it easy to combine.

The best hairstyles for the Zopfgummi trend

Even on the catwalk, the Zopfgummi knows no restraint. Jean-Paul Gaultier completely relies on the retro hairstyling with the fabric rubber and equips his models with very high tied ponytails. The strictly styled version with smooth top hair and curly lace (large picture above) is elegant and cool at the same time.

The 80s look absolutely created by Gaultier with a loose wave and highly styled ponytail in Undone look. The most important accessory: of course the thick Zopfgummi! The look sparkles with nostalgic energy and looks cheeky and relaxed.

Also, Whitney Port has come to the Scrunchie and shows how every day is the trendy hair elastic.

80s hairstyles & styling

Colorful, loud and cool – the 80s have a lot to offer: Wild hair, high-pitched make-up, and daring fashion are part of the standard repertoire of this era. If you want a little less, we have the soft version for you!

80s Styling And Short Hairstyle

“Allowed is what pleases!” – no, this is not a song of the Neue Deutsche Welle, but THE statement of the shrill 80s!

Clear that with so many weird disinhibitions one or the other is perceived as a styling sin. But the 80s also had their tempting sides: On oversized blazers, leggings and jumpsuits woman does not want to do without and hairstyling are again volume, side flip and “Vokuhila” (short front, long behind) announced.

Typical 80s: crepe & Co.! More on this we show you in our picture gallery:
80’s styling: at that time shrill, today soft

Retro is a trend, yet people’s perspectives and perceptions have changed. In times when styling is dominated by naturalness and minimalism, the otherwise rather flashy ’80s trend may take a backseat.

Pictured left: An expressive short haircut with a long pony party, sporty short jacket, a crop top, shiny high waist leggings and accessories in neon colors – more ’80s styling does not work!

A picture on the right: Completely different and yet very similar: The discreet variant of the 80ies styling contains all the basic elements of the iconic look. The short hairstyle is styled cool up, the crop top is replaced by a short-cut sweater, under the fabric instead of bare skin flashes.

The leggings give way to a high waist skirt and only the shoulder bag shines in neon pink. Done is the minimalist eighties look!

Inspiration and the perfect sound for eighties styling, these female chart breakers of the 80s and their hits:
  • Kim Wilde: You Keep Me Hangin ‘On
  • Cindy Lauper: I Drove All Night
  • Tiffany: I Think We’re Alone Now
  • Bananarama: Venus
  • Nena: 99 balloons
  • Bonnie Tyler: Holding Out For a Hero
