Shampoos are often in the foreground – as shampoo products of the chemical industry, some shampoos contain active ingredients that may cause allergies in people with sensitive skin. Make shampoo yourself – What do the conventional shampoos contain?
Originally, the hair washed with soap and water, from the 19th century, the English hairdressers already made the first shampoo with herbs and essential oils.
In 1927 Hans Schwarzkopf developed the first liquid shampoo. In the middle of the 20th century, the era of mass production of shampoos began with the development of the first plastic bottles.
Nowadays, they are one of the most important hair care products. And while high-quality products protect and gently nourish the hair, there are always those on the market that contain allergy-causing substances. A shampoo composed of several components; it may contain, among other things, the following active ingredients:
Since the product can attract and bind water from the environment (is therefore hygroscopic), it can dry the human skin in high concentration and therefore cause irritation.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG)
In addition, shampoos contain many health-safe ingredients – Sulfosuccinic acid esters are gentle on the skin and mild, have a good foaming effect. Although various silicone-based film-forming agents are not harmful, some may leave stains on clothes that are difficult to remove afterward.
The topic for or against preservatives is very controversial. On the one hand, because of the high water content in the final product, there is the danger that shampoos without antimicrobial preservatives cannot meet the minimum shelf life.
Ultimately, it depends on the product and its composition, whether and to what extent it is suitable for the specific person. That’s why it’s not always easy for most buyers to find the right one. For comparison, below is a listing of the various substances that may be considered in the manufacture of homemade shampoos.
